This study presents an investigation on the use of submerged counterflow jets as a means for stabilizing the spatial hydraulic jump occurring in abruptly expanding channels. The characteristics of the flow downstream from the stilling basin and the main parameters influencing the effectiveness of the device in improving flow uniformity and reducing scouring potential are examined in laboratory tests, under several geometric configurations and hydraulic boundary conditions. The position within the stilling basin and the jet density (i.e., the number of orifices issuing the counterflow jets) were found to be important parameters influencing the performance of the device. Overall, the results indicate that this dissipation system has promising capabilities in forcing the transition from supercritical to subcritical flow, by significantly shortening the protection length needed to limit the phenomena of instability associated with spatial hydraulic jumps.

Confluences are a common feature of riverine systems; the area of converging flow streamlines and potential mixing of separate flows. The hydrodynamics about confluences have a highly complex three-dimensional flow structure. This paper presents the results of a numerical study using the CCHE2D code to investigate the influence of junction angle and discharge ratio on the flow and erosion patterns. The hydraulic and geometric parameters which affect the maximum relative scouring depth are analyzed. The model is first calibrated and validated. Then three discharge ratios, seven junction angles and five width ratios are considered and compared. Results generally agree with experimental data and show that the process of scouring depends on all these parameters. Numerical results demonstrate that a decrease in the ratio of the tributary width to the main channel width results in an increase in the size of the separation zone. Furthermore, the increase in the width ratio leads to a decrease in the maximum depth of bed erosion. Finally, the maximum depth of bed erosion at the confluence increases with the increasing angle of the junction.

Fishways are used to allow fish to migrate around water infrastructure, whether movements are in the upstream or downstream direction. Hydrodynamic conditions within various fishways, including turbulence levels, are important for successful fish passage. A numerical hydrodynamic study was conducted for V-weir fishways, which assist species migrating upstream. The variables investigated included, fishway slopes of 4%, 7%, and 10%, relative spacing between weirs of 1.3, 2.6, and 4 (D/L, ratio of distance between weirs to pool width), and weir angles of 22.5 , 40 , and 60 . Turbulence characteristics, including turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), Reynolds shear stress (RSS), turbulent intensity (TI), turbulent dissipation (TD), as well as maximum water velocity, were examined by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation using a re-normalized group or RNG turbulence model. The CFD was calibrated with flow measurements made in a physical model of the V-weir fishway in laboratory control experiments. Based on inferences from fish passage literature, the results showed that, in the range of parameters studied, a weir angle of 22.5 , a slope of 10% and relative spacing between weirs of 1.3 and 2.6 were assessed as offering the best potential performance for several species and sizes of fish, while the latter has lower cost as it requires fewer weirs. The V-weir fishway may be adaptable for smaller fish.

The present experimental study analyzes the effects of lateral jet flow (LJF) in a stilling basin with abruptly expanding channels on the stabilization and the significant characteristics of spatial hydraulic jump. The experiments were carried out with three different inflow Frude number (8.77,9.56,and 10.87), three different distances of the LJF from the abruptly expanding channel (0 m, 0.25 m, and 0.5 m), and one and two LJF (i.e., the number of active orifices in the LJF system). According to the results, both distances of the LJF from the narrow channel and the number of LJF improve the hydraulic jump's stabilization and flow pattern enhancement in the tailwater channel. Additionally, the average sequent depth and the spatial jump length decreased by 14 and 20%, respectively, compared to no LJF. Also, using LJF increases relative energy dissipation by 12.45% on average.
