Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the first-line drug in the treatment of depression, and the investigation of the biological effects of SSRIs in patients with depression and in healthy subjects may lead to a hypothesis regarding the yet largely unknown causes of depression. This systematic review points to effects of SSRIs increasing positive emotional processing and decreasing measures of divided and sustained attention which may be central features of depression.
