Anxiety and social support were identified as the predictors of postpartum depression. The development of the PDRS is clinically beneficial and useful during pregnancy and postpartum for the screening of postpartum depression in Thai women.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of mistreatment perception among medical students as well as to identify the types of mistreatment and their associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed all of the 4 th to 6 th year medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, from January to April 2017. Three questionnaires were employed: 1) Demographic data 2) Mistreatment perception, and 3) the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 Thai version. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results were presented as frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation. The factors associated with mistreatment perception were analyzed by means of the chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: Two hundred and ninety-eight medical students (55.0%) completed the questionnaires, 66.1% of them were female. Their mean age was 22.5+1.1 years. As to the medical students' perception, the majority (63.4%) reported experiencing at least one incidence of mistreatment by attending physicians (53.7%), residents (36.2%) and nurses (16.4%) within the previous year. The majority of mistreatment types were verbal criticism (59.7%) and discriminative behavior (51.4%). The mistreated medical students reported consequences such as experiencing unpleasant feelings (41.3%) and burnout (35.6%). According to the PHQ-9 Thai version findings, 11.1% of all of our students had depression; however, depression did not correlate with the mistreatment perception. The significant factor that correlated with mistreatment perception was the academic year. Conclusion: More than a half of the surveyed medical students perceived being mistreated and reported experiencing unpleasant feelings as a consequence.
Objective: To study the perceived level of stigma in patients with schizophrenia and caregivers. Material and Method: This was a cross-sectional study. The researchers collected all data of patients with schizophrenia and caregivers in the psychiatric out-patient unit in Songklanagarind Hospital from May 2015 to March 2016. A self-administered questionnaire was used. Demographics and level of perception of stigma data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in the form of a percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Results: One hundred seventy-one patients with schizophrenia participated. Eighty-nine patients were female (52.0%); the average age was 42.3 years [standard deviation (S.D.)=13.4]; duration of illness was 15 years (S.D.=11.4). Most patients were Buddhist (84.2%), unemployed (38.0%), paranoid type (68.4%). One hundred seventy-one caregivers participated. The average age was 51.2 years (S.D.=13.4). Most caregivers were female (71.9%), Buddhist (86.0%), a parent of patient (40.4%). Average duration of care was 12.7 years (S.D.=9.3). The study found that the patients perceived a low level of stigma (62.0%). Only 1.8% of patients perceived a high level of stigma. The caregivers also perceived a low level of stigma (62.0%). Only 0.6% of caregivers perceived a high level of stigma. Conclusion: Most patients with schizophrenia and caregivers perceived a low level of stigma.
Objective: Elderly patients with their deteriorating global health are becoming more vulnerable to mental disorders, especially depression. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of depression amongstpatients attending outpatient clinics in Songklanagarind Hospital, a tertiary care center in southern Thailand.Material and Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Elderly people (65-99 years of age) attending the outpatient department of Songklanagarind Hospital during 1st of September-30th of November 2015 were included in the study. The sample size was calculated using Epicalc in R program. We used the 15-item Thai Geriatric DepressionScale (TGDS-15) questionnaire to find the prevalence of depression among this group. Associated factors of depression were identified by multiple logistic regression using a backward-stepwise method. Results: The total number of participants in this study was 408. The prevalence of depression based on the TGDS-15,cut-off score of >5, among elderly outpatients in Songklanagarind Hospital was 9.6%. However, regarding multiple regression analysis, no statistically significant factors; sex, age, marital status, educational level, and religion, could be found to be associated with depression. Conclusion: Almost one-tenth of the elderly patients visiting the outpatient clinics within Songklanagarind Hospital haddepression. This prevalence was quite high. The depression would worsen their health conditions. Good, rigorousscreening coupled with a referral system should be encouraged and then implemented in this hospital.
