The authors hypothesize that environmental values derive from a sense of connectivity with nature. Connectivity describes a perception of sameness between the self, others, and the natural world. The experience of connectivity involves dissolution of boundaries and a sense of a shared or common essence between the self, nature, and others. Connectivity with nature differs theoretically and operationally from other explanations of environmental values, including cultural bias, postmaterialism, and social altruism. The authors describe their development of a sociometric scale to operationalize connectivity with nature. Based on data from a mail survey of Pennsylvania landowners, the authors use multiple regression analyses to determine the extent to which connectivity with nature predicts and explains environmental concern and behavior in the presence of standard sociodemographic variables. Survey respondents reported a high level of connectivity with nature, and connectivity retained a significant and positive relationship to environmental concern and environmental behavior in multiple regression models. Implications of these findings are advanced.

IntroductionPalliative patients with metastatic bone pain endure long waiting times and multiple visits to radiation therapy departments for treatment. This can prolong suffering and may be a factor in patients consenting for treatment. Rapid Access Palliative Clinics (RAPC) have been established around the world to provide a multidisciplinary approach to consultation, simulation and treatment on the same day. This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a RAPC at Waikato Regional Cancer Centre (WRCC) by reducing the time from referral to first specialist appointment (FSA).MethodsThe structure and process for the RAPC day was outlined and the roles of staff were defined. A retrospective study was undertaken of the 261 consecutive patients seen in the RAPC from April 2009 to April 2013. Tracking sheets were created to record patient information at the initial consultation. Follow-up telephone calls were used to assess the patient post-treatment. Patient information was entered into a database.ResultsA total of 226 patients received radiation therapy treatment to 307 sites. All patients were seen within 1 week of referral. Sixty-three per cent of patients were simulated and treated on the same day. The change in radiation therapy fractionation prescriptions was statistically significant (P = 0.0012). There was a statistically significant difference between initial and follow-up pain scores (P < 0.0001).ConclusionEvaluation of the clinic has shown that it compares favourably with similar international clinics. The RAPC has decreased the referral to FSA for palliative radiation therapy and reduced the number of visits the patient has to endure due to an increase in single fraction prescriptions. This has resulted in rapid reduction in pain for the majority of patients.

This study uses an experiment where ferry passengers are sold hotel room "views" to evaluate the impact of wind turbines views on tourists' vacation experience. Participants purchase a chance for a weekend hotel stay. Information about the hotel rooms was limited to the quality of the hotel and its distance from a large wind turbine, as well as whether or not a particular room would have a view of the turbine. While there was generally a negative effect of turbine views, this did not hold across all participants, and did not seem to be effected by distance or hotel quality.

The myriad of environmental problems facing cities are described and analyzed. The magnitude of the environmental crisis is explored and its causes are identified. In order to remedy environmental problems, an integrated policy approach is required. The tradeoffs between economic development and environmental quality are examined and a strategy to overcome them is proposed.
