This article discusses the application of the technique of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of geotechnical properties based on previously known index properties. The use of ANNs in soils from different regions is evaluated to estimate the compression index, used to calculate the consolidation settlement, and permeability of saturated soils. The article also discusses the use of ANNs for determination of consistency limits of fine-grained soils. The studies discussed in this article showed that ANNs have potential application as an alternative to empirical correlations in predicting properties of soils as a function of their index properties for soils from different regions of Brazil and other countries.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
