Since its post-World War II inception, the science of record linkage has grown exponentially and is used across industrial, governmental, and academic agencies. The academic fields that rely on record linkage are diverse, ranging from history to public health to demography. In this paper, we introduce the different types of data linkage and give a historical context to their development. We then introduce the three types of underlying models for probabilistic record linkage: Fellegi-Sunter-based methods, machine learning methods, and Bayesian methods. Practical considerations, such as data standardization and privacy concerns, are then discussed. Finally, recommendations are given for organizations developing or maintaining record linkage programs, with an emphasis on organizations measuring long-term complications of disasters, such as 9/11.
Family psychologists primarily use descriptive research methods. Important measurement principles involved include the Spearman-Brown formula and the following principles: measurements do not combine simply, reliabilities and restrictions in the range of variables set limits on correlations, regression toward the mean is inherent, and correlations must be corrected for attenuation to be compared. The author notes that all predictions should be made using regression equations; gain scores and quotients of variables pose problems. Covariances (i.e., partial and multiple correlations to “control” variables) usually are underadjustments. Statistical tests of significance are flawed, and the use of factor analyses of test items is generally not a good practice. Sample size and the ratio of the number of participants to the number of variables are important.
The poor mental health of former combatants in Liberia, both child and adult, might be mitigated if Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration programming assessed participants for head trauma and traumatic brain injury using simple screening methods. The specific health and mental health needs of ex-combatants--a highly vulnerable group--will need to be addressed by Liberia. If left untreated, ex-combatants with high rates of suicidal ideation and post-traumatic stress disorder might be susceptible to re-recruitment into new conflicts in the region.
Statisticians recount experiences and share results from investigating the alleged war crimes of Siobodan Milosevic Significant positive evidence for the first two questions would support a position (favorable to the defense) that the government of Yugoslavia was not Wanted poster for Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and Bosnian Serb leaders Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic released by the State Department Thursday, March 2, 2000. The State Department announced a reward of upto $5 million for information leading to thearrest and conviction of the men indicted by an international tribunal.
Because it utilizes a combination of high impact practices—a collaborative project, service learning, and undergraduate research—the use of a community-engaged framework within an undergraduate introductory statistics course can improve educational outcomes for distance learners. During the Fall of 2020, because the usual community-engaged approach of having students partner with a community organization to collect and analyze data was not feasible, we used a recently released dataset on coping mechanisms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students participated in an analysis of those data in order to inform policy-making within the university regarding support for students during the pandemic. Similar outcomes in terms of improved understanding of and attitudes toward statistics were achieved through this approach as had been achieved through community-engaged projects in previous semesters. Moving to a distance learning format within the pandemic has required rethinking how these components of community-engaged learning can be preserved. This case study shows that similar learning outcomes can be achieved despite the limitations the pandemic places on learning.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
