Fifty-five paleolimnological records from lakes in the circumpolar Arctic reveal widespread species changes and ecological reorganizations in algae and invertebrate communities since approximately anno Domini 1850. The remoteness of these sites, coupled with the ecological characteristics of taxa involved, indicate that changes are primarily driven by climate warming through lengthening of the summer growing season and related limnological changes. The widespread distribution and similar character of these changes indicate that the opportunity to study arctic ecosystems unaffected by human influences may have disappeared.climate change ͉ paleolimnology ͉ Anthropocene ͉ warming ͉ indicators P olar amplification of anthropogenic warming is consistently predicted by general circulation models, largely because of positive feedback mechanisms involving cryospheric processes (1). This heightened climatic sensitivity is supported by recent accelerations of glacier retreat (2), sea-ice thinning (3), and permafrost degradation (4). Although the instrumental record of temperature across the Arctic is incomplete and generally of short duration, warming appears to be concentrated in the decades between approximately anno Domini 1915-1940 and approximately anno Domini 1965. However, proxy data indicate that much of the Arctic began to warm considerably earlier, in the mid-19th century (6). Such generalized trends, however, are neither spatially nor temporally uniform (7), because of regional differences in continentality, ocean heat transport, glacier and sea ice distribution, topography, and vegetation. For example, whereas much of Beringia and central Siberia have warmed Ͼ0.5°C in the last 50 years, there has been little change or even cooling (7) in parts of the North Atlantic sector. Nonetheless, all subregions of the Arctic are considered highly ecologically sensitive, implying that anthropogenic warming will test ecosystem resilience and potentially induce dramatic shifts in community composition.In the absence of long-term climatic and environmental monitoring data, proxy data from the sediments of lakes and ponds, which are ubiquitous features of most arctic landscapes, can be used to provide a long-term perspective of environmental change (8, 9). Siliceous algal remains, specifically the valves of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) and the stomatocysts and scales of chrysophytes (Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae), as well as chitinous invertebrate remains (Chironomidae, Diptera and Cladocera, Crustacea), are the primary paleoindicators in lake sediments that provide reliable records of changes in water quality, habitat, and catchment processes (10). Here, we synthesize a large number of paleolimnological records from arctic lakes and ponds, providing a circumpolar assessment of recent ecological changes. A diatom-based calibration model for predicting summer temperatures was developed using climatically sensitive subarctic lakes in northern Fennoscandia. The model was applied to a sediment core from a treeline lake to infer trends in Holocene climate. The record exhibits long-term variations, as well as a series of shorter-term fluctuations on a time scale of centuries. Summers were warmest in the area about 6200 cal yr B.P. and featured distinct cooling episodes around 8300, 7200, 4200, 3000, and 400 cal yr B.P., most of these coinciding with some known climate events (e.g., the 8200 cal yr B.P. event and the Little Ice Age). The similarity of the observed shifts with the pacings of climate events from marine and ice-core records represents evidence for coupled ocean–atmosphere forcing of the regional climate.

Changes of treelines and alpine vegetation in relation to post-glacial climate dynamics in northern Fennoscandia based on pollen and chironomid records.ABSTRACT: Palaeoclimatic records derived from a variety of independent proxies provide evidence of post-glacial changes of temperature and soil moisture in northern Fennoscandia. We use pollen percentage, pollen influx, stomatal and chironomid records from Toskaljavri, a high-altitude lake in northern Finland, to assess how treelines and alpine vegetation there have responded to these climate changes. The evidence suggests that the cool, moist climate of the early Holocene supported birch forest in the area 9600 cal. yr BP onwards and that a rise of temperature triggered the immigration of pine at 8300 cal. yr BP. At 6100-4000 cal. yr BP altitudinal treeline in the area was formed by pine, in contrast to the modern situation where mountain birch reaches a higher elevation. Alpine vegetation also demonstrates clear changes. Plant communities typical of dry, oligotrophic heaths of northern Fennoscandia expanded during the dry climatic period at 7000-4000 cal. yr BP and decreased in response to cooler and moister conditions after 4000 cal. yr BP. Alpine plant communities favouring moist sites show an inverse pattern, expanding after a change towards moister climate after 4000 cal. yr BP. In a redundancy analysis (RDA), a statistically significant proportion of the variability in the total chironomid assemblages was captured by changes in the pollen types reflecting alpine vegetation typical of moist sites. Although chironomid community changes appeared to follow the major patterns in the alpine vegetation succession, the present study does not support a direct link between the changing treeline position and chironomid stratigraphy. Rather, the data indicate that the terrestrial and aquatic environments have each responded directly to the same ultimate cause, namely changing Holocene climate.
