The paper presents a review of current achievements in the Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) in relation to its possible applications in the study of phenomena occurring in fluidised bed reactors. Reactors of that kind are being increasingly used in chemical engineering, energetics (fluidised bed boilers) or industrial dryers. However, not all phenomena in the fluidised bed have been thoroughly understood. This results in the need to explore and develop new research methods. Various aspects of ECT operation and data processing are described with their applicability in scientific research. The idea for investigation of temperature distribution in the fluidised bed, using multimodal tomography, is also introduced. Metrological requirements of process tomography such as sensitivity, resolution, and speed of data acquiring are noted.
This paper presents a method for the online determination of the spatial distribution of the moisture content in granular material. It might be essential for the monitoring and optimal control of, for example, drying processes. The proposed method utilizes Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). As an exemplary material for experimental research, the black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) was used. The relationship between the electrical impedance of the chokeberry and its moisture content was determined for a wide range of frequencies (20 Hz–200 kHz). The EIT research consisted of both simulation and experimental investigation. Experimental studies of the spatial distribution of the moisture content were performed in a cylindrical vessel equipped with 8 electrodes circumferentially arranged. The voltage signal from the electrodes was acquired simultaneously using the data acquisition module. Due to the high impedance of the chokeberries, exceeding 109 Ω for the dried matter, extraordinary instrumentation was necessary to be applied. On the other hand, raw chokeberry was characterized by a several orders of magnitude lower impedance (103–104 Ω), especially for high frequencies. The wide range of the observed impedance was able to be measured owing to its use of the voltage stimulation instead of the current stimulation (which is most common for EIT). The image reconstruction problem was solved using an iterative Gauss–Newton algorithm and the EIDORS (Electrical Impedance Tomography and Diffuse Optical Tomography Reconstruction Software) package. The obtained results showed a satisfactory ability to localize an insufficiently dried part of the material. Prospective ways to improve the imaging quality are also discussed.
The possibility for spatial and temporal monitoring of environmental, chemical or thermal processes is of high importance for their better understanding thus control and optimization. Therefore, measurement methods that enable such opportunities might be especially valuable for researchers and process engineers. For this reason, in this paper the novel Electrical Impedance Tomography system is proposed that enables the visualization of the processes in which the electrical conductivity of material is changing. The proposed EIT system is based mostly on general purpose equipment. It consists of three laboratory-grade devices: a signal generator, a switching device and a data acquisition card for voltage measurement. In addition to those devices, the current source was constructed to complete the system. The EIT system was designed to have the ability of sourcing the current of frequency up to 250 kHz. A set of validation experiments were carried out to verify the EIT system accuracy. The validation tests consisted of object detection, distinguishing between objects of different conductivity, multifrequency imaging and visualization of slow-changing processes. The obtained results were also compared with the numerical simulations. The proposed system was proven to have the ability of correct imaging of irregularity inside the area of the sensor.
Transfer function matrix model of the bubbling fluidized bed boiler The paper presents proposal of a model of the fluidized bed boiler adapted for use in model-based controllers e.g. predictive, adaptive or internal model control (IMC). The model has been derived in the form of transfer function matrix which allows its direct implementation in the controller structure. Formulated model takes into consideration the principal cross-coupling between process variables which enables the opportunity to search for feasibility of decoupling control. The results of the identification of the dynamics of the 2 MW industrial bubbling fluidized bed boiler using the proposed model form was presented. According to the experimental data it was found that despite of introduced simplifications presented model allows the boiler behavior prediction.
