Towards the end of World War II, Żaki moved to Kraków, where he began studying history at the Philosophical Faculty of the then underground Jagiellonian University. Żaki received his Master's degree in 1947 but had already become involved in archaeological fi eld research in 1945, under the supervision of Tadeusz Reyman. Between 1947 and 1952 he worked as an expert-inspector of archaeological monuments in the Katowice, Kraków, and Rzeszów voivodships. As was the case with most Polish archaeologists beginning their careers in the postwar period, Żaki made his debut (in 1947) in the journal Z Otchłani Wieków, published by the Polish Prehistoric Society, with which he collaborated until 1980. He introduced to a broader circulation the results of his research on the sites of the Linear Pottery culture (Żaki 1948), the Samborzec group (Żaki 1949a), and the Baden culture (1949b). He also verifi ed the socalled South-Moravian Painted Pottery culture (Żaki 1951), as well as distinguishing the "Rzeszów type" of Neolithic ceramics (Żaki 1962), later defi ned as a late, Rzeszów phase of the Malice culture (Kadrow 2006). Andrzej Żaki received his doctorate in philosophy, in the fi eld of prehistory, in 1949 on the basis of the dissertation Początki kultury łużyckiej w dorzeczu górnej Wisły [The Beginnings of the Lusatian Culture in Upper Vistula Basin] (Żaki 1950b).
