Trata-se de estudo descritivo envolvendo 63 deficientes visuais residentes na zona urbana da cidade de Sobral/CE, com o objetivo de conhecer o perfil e os modos de enfrentamento destes deficientes no âmbito da família e na sociedade. O estudo foi realizado no período de maio de 2002 a novembro de 2003. Utilizamos como método para coleta de dados a visita domiciliária e a entrevista livre. Os resultados apontam que a maior parte das pessoas estudadas são do sexo feminino (36); têm mais de 61 anos de idade (40); o período de deficiência é de 5 a 10 anos ( 17); estão em fase de ajustamento ao estigma ( 18); têm cegueira adquirida ( 55); desconhecem a causa da deficiência ( 23); ficaram cegas devido ao glaucoma e/ou catarata (18); o principal cuidador é a própria família (25); disseram que não precisam de nenhum dispositivo de auto-ajuda (33). Diante destes resultados, podemos concluir que o enfermeiro ao prestar assistência a este tipo de cliente deve observar o seu perfil para buscar estratégias que contribuam para a educação em saúde como forma de inserir o deficiente visual na sociedade. UNITERMOS: Portadores de deficiência visual; Perfil de saúde.This is a descriptive study that involved 63 blind people who live in the urban zone of the city of Sobral/CE that aimed at knowing their profile and the way they face adversities in their family life and society. The study was carried out from May 2002 to November 2003. Data were collected through home visits and free interviews. The outcomes show that most of the people studied are female (36); are older than 61 years old (40); have been having eye problems from 5 to 10 years (17); are adapting to the stigma (18); became blind as they got older (55); do not know the cause of their eye problem (23); became blind due to glaucoma and/or cataracts (18); find in their families support for treatment (25); said they need no self-help device (33). As a result, we can conclude that the nurse, when assisting this kind of client, shall define his profile in order to seek for strategies that contribute to health education as a way to insert the blind into society.
