O artigo analisa como a fotografia foi empregada no interior das ciências e, especificamente, na medicina ocidental, desde a segunda metade do século XIX até as primeiras décadas do século XX. Nesse período, a fotografia sedimentou o seu papel como instrumento de registro, de conhecimento e de divulgação das práticas médicas, inicialmente na Europa. O principal meio de divulgação de fotografias foram as publicações médicas seriadas, motivo pelo qual a técnica foi rapidamente vulgarizada, a despeito das resistências que despertou. São analisadas aqui fotografias produzidas, principalmente, em Paris e São Paulo, com a preocupação de explicar as condições de sua produção, as implicações heurísticas ligadas ao uso da fotografia na medicina e como, a partir dela, novos significados foram agregados ao universo de representações no campo das práticas médicas.
Proponho retomar a seguinte matéria: historiadores e, de modo geral, os cientistas sociais ainda não desenvolvem satisfatoriamente seus estudos implicando questões de visualidade. Eu parto do diagnóstico de que os pesquisadores brasileiros, mesmo sem ter enfrentado suficientemente o tema, sentem-se à vontade em tratá-lo. Para contribuir com tal discussão, penso ser proveitoso incluir entre as causas do problema certa tradição de pensamento científico. O problema que atravessa os esforços para entender seja o mundo por intermédio das imagens nele produzidas, sejam as imagens por si mesmas, repousa numa tradição que as práticas científicas ou especulativas de séculos atrás legaram às gerações futuras. Elas perduram até hoje, malgrado os episódios tão revolucionários como o embate entre ciência e Igreja acerca de quem girava em torno de quem: se o Sol ou a Terra.
