Book Reviews 981 lead of Raymond Williams, Wilson seeks to show the subtle interplay between the marketplace, which "sets limits," and the creative individual, who learns to work within those limits and to use them for artistic ends. Finding that balance is a laudable goal, but Wilson doesn't quite reach it. The book's two main parts remain somewhat separate and disconnected, despite his best efforts. Thus at the end of the case studies, we are not sure just how much those four careers were the products of the marketplace and how much of individual creative will.
