A scanning polarized lidar was used to detect flying honey bees trained to locate buried land mines through odor detection. A lidar map of bee density shows good correlation with maps of chemical plume strength and bee density determined by visual and video counts. The co-polarized lidar backscatter signal was found to be more effective than the crosspolarized signal for detecting honey bees in flight. Laboratory measurements show that the depolarization ratio of scattered light is near zero for bee wings and up to 30% for bee bodies.
An experiment is described showing that an optical scintillation instrument gives reliable values of heat and momentum fluxes in the surface layer. subject to the usual restrictions of homogeneity and steady state. This instrument measures the turbulence inner scale and refractive-index structure parameter, which are used to obtain the fluxes from Monin-Obukhov similarity relationships. The instrument gives space-averaged values over a propagation path that can range in length from tens to hundreds of meters. The history of the use of optical propagation to estimate fluxes is reviewed.
A lidar system was used in a seawater tank to measure the average diffuse reflectivity of live sardines. Diffuse reflectivity was measured to be 10 % for a copolarized laser return and 3 % for a cross-polarized return. We used these calibration measurements to infer the density of sardines in areas of the Southern California Bight from vertical profiles obtained with the lidar mounted on a ship. Within schools densities up to ~0.01 kg m-3 were observed. During hourly survey periods total habitat densities up to ~2 x10-3 kg m-2 were observed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
