Results are presented from an epidemiologic investigation of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Army nurse veterans. Analysis of questionnaire data from more than 700 Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans still on active duty in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps reveals a current PTSD rate for Vietnam veteran nurses of 3.3%. This rate is comparable to that found among nonnurse active duty Army Vietnam veterans (5.1%) and is much lower than estimates (18%-54%) for civilian Vietnam veterans. Results suggest that danger and exposure to violence may be responsible for stress reactions such as PTSD among noncombatants. Additional results indicate that social support is an important moderator in the attenuation of PTSD.Research on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans of the Vietnam conflict has focused primarily on the effects of combat participation in its etiology (DeFazio,
There is increasing evidence that regular mental and physical exercise can enhance overall health and functional abilities in older adults. This article describes how a vigorous program of playing polo can provide important mental and physical benefits—even for older adults. In the present context of health care reform, it is especially important for health care professionals to recognize the value of exercise as an useful, cost-effective intervention for enhancing mental and physical health and to explore ways to encourage their older clients to adopt an enjoyable exercise program.
An AC power-quality survey was conducted at four hospitals of differing bed sizes in the Midwest. This power-line survey concentrated on determining the ac power quality in three areas: ICU/CCU, radiology, and the clinical chemistry lab. A summary of three months of monitoring indicates very stable RMS voltage levels but the presence of substantial voltage impulses or electrical noise. The substantial ac line voltage impulses observed may be of concern to both medical equipment users and designers.
