Este trabalho relata a experiência de discente do programa de Pós-Graduação em Extensão Rural (PPGExR) da Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco (UNIVASF), no uso das metodologias participativas, em sua atuação como extensionista em um projeto de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (ATER). Baseado em atividades comunitárias realizadas no primeiro ano de execução do projeto, trata-se de um relato de caráter descritivo. Foram realizados 24 Diagnósticos Rurais Participativos (DRPs) em quatro municípios do Território de Identidade Bacia do Jacuípe, a partir da execução do projeto nos anos de 2016 a 2019, sendo experimentadas as principais ferramentas participativas: a entrevista semiestruturada; a linha do tempo; e a matriz de forças, oportunidades, fraquezas e ameaças (FOFA). Nessa perspectiva, revela-se a importância das metodologias participativas que colaboram com a prática educativa nas comunidades, permitindo a troca de experiências e contribuindo com uma ATER mais democrática. Ademais, a experiência contribuiu com a formação da extensionista, proporcionando um conhecimento interdisciplinar.
