Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of every child presenting with abdominal pain, fever and palpable abdominal mass with peripheral eosinophilia. The presence of bowel inflammation and fistulas should not preclude such diagnosis.
Glomus tumors are relatively rare vascular tumors with reported incidence of 1.6% of all soft tissue tumors. It is variously regarded as a hamartoma or a neoplasm of neuromyoarterial glomus, which consists of dilated vascular channels, surrounded by proliferating glomus, nerve cells, and plays an important role in temperature regulation. We report the case of glomangioma in a 43-year-old male who came to dermatology OPD with a painful lesion over the right elbow of six months duration. Cutaneous examination revealed a single round reddish blue papule of about 0.5 cm in size on the flexor aspect of the right elbow. The papule was firm in consistency and tender. The excision biopsy showed stratified squamous lining with well circumscribed tumor in the dermis. The tumor consisted of sheets of uniform cells with pale cytoplasm; round to ovoid centrally placed punched out nuclei and well defined cell margins. There were numerous dilated thin walled vascular spaces surrounded by a layer of tumor cells and the histopathology was consistent with glomangioma.
a b s t r a c tObjectives: We aimed in our study to determine the incidence and type of congenital cardiac anomaly (CCA) in newborns associated with imperforate anus (IA), the outcome of surgical reconstruction of the anorectum in our center, and the need for performing echocardiography in all patients with IA. Materials and methods: The preoperative echocardiography reports of all cases born with IA and managed at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia over a period of 11 years (Jan 2000eDec 2010) were reviewed. The average annual delivery rate of this hospital is 5500. Results: During the study period, 61 patients of IA were diagnosed that showed an incidence of about 1 per 992 live births, and the rate of CCA among the IA subjects was 15 (24.6%). In 12 patients (19.6%), the associated CCAs were of a mild nature, and reconstruction of the anorectum went smoothly. Three patients (4.9%) had significant CCA and died. Conclusion: The incidence of IA in our hospital is 1 per 992 live births, and its association with CCA is 24.6%. The majority of CCAs associated with IA were of the mild type.
Trichobezoar is a rare disorder in which a collection of swallowed hair and some undigested food particles are retained in the gastrointestinal tract. It is frequently seen in psychic patients (trichotillomania). It may be present with vague symptoms, such as anorexia, anemia, weight loss and recurrent abdominal pain, or symptoms and signs of intestinal obstruction. This report illustrates a case of trichobezoar with a serious sequence and unusual presentation. In this investigation; a female child (12-years-old) with a huge trichobezoar was presented to our emergency department with diffuse peritonitis due to gastric perforation. She was treated successfully by gastronomy and the unblock evacuation of the trichobezoar.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
