It is safe to use topical nasal oxymetazoline with or without benzalkonium chloride for 10 days in patients with vasomotor rhinitis. However, this study indicates that benzalkonium chloride in nasal decongestant sprays affects the nasal mucosa also after short-term use.
Fluticasone propionate is more effective and has a faster onset of action than placebo in the treatment of rhinitis medicamentosa. An adequate treatment of these patients consists of a combination of vasoconstrictor withdrawal and a topical corticosteroid to alleviate the withdrawal process.
