-016Synthesis, Structure, and Characterization of a New SecondHarmonic-Generating Tellurite: Na 2 TeW 2 O 9 .-Polycrystalline samples of the title compound are prepared by solid state methods from stoichiometric amounts of Na 2 CO 3 , TeO 2 , and WO 3 (650 • C, 3 d). Single crystals are obtained hydrothermally from a solution of 3 M NaOH, WO 3 , and TeO 2 (autoclave, 470 • C, 48 h, 65% yield). As revealed by single crystal XRD, Na 2 TeW 2 O 9 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Ia with Z = 16. It exhibits a three-dimensional structure comprising distorted WO 6 octahedra linked to asymmetric TeO 3 groups. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on polycrystalline samples indicate a strong SHG intensity of approximately 500 times that of SiO 2 . As revealed by additional SHG measurements the material is phase-matchable (type I).
