O em prêgo do m étodo da sedi m entação (H offm an, Pons e Ja n e r, 1), m é todo simples e rápido, pode n estes casos levar a resultados plen am en te sa tisfa tó rios .D iferente é o problem a quando se e n f re n ta a necessidade de diagnosticar cor re ta m e n te infecções aco m p an h ad as de es cassa ovoposição, como no caso da esquistossom ose m ansônica, seja n a presença de núm ero m enor de p a ra sita s no organism o, seja n a s infecções antigas, em que a p re ciável proporção dos ovos é retid a nos te cidos. Nêstes casos a boa sensibilidade exige exam e de m aior qu an tid ad e de m a té ria fecal, au m e n tan d o -se assim a p ro babilidade do encontro de ovos de S. m a n soni. Isto pode ser conseguido atrav és da le itu ra de m aior núm ero de lâm in as de sedim ento (3), artifício que au m en ta sig n ificativ am en te as cifras de prevalência da helm intose em inquéritos epidemioló-gicos.
