RESUMENObjetivo: identificar las propiedades de la saliva y otros factores que presentan una asociación con la presencia de caries dental en escolares del municipio de Floridablanca Santander. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional analítico de corte transversal, con 75 escolares de ambos géneros de 9 a 11 años de edad, vinculados con una institución educativa de Floridablanca. Se realizó un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio simple y se consideraron variables sociodemográficas (edad, género, grado que cursaba, convivencia, trabajo de los padres, estrato socioeconómi-co), variables relacionadas con hábitos dietéticos, saliva (pH salival, aclaramiento salival y flujo salival), caries dental (índice COP-D, presencia de caries dental no cavitacional), e higiene bucal (índice cuantificado de placa -ICP y frecuencia del cepillado). Se aplicó el consentimiento informado a los padres y asentimiento a los niños para su participación, posteriormente se analizaron los datos con un modelo de regresión múltiple de Poisson. Resultados: el 54,7% de la población fueron mujeres, la edad que predominó fue 10 años (70,7%), la prevalencia de caries dental fue de 57,3%, la probabilidad de presentar caries dental en los escolares de quinto grado de la institución educativa que presentaron un ICP regular fue 1,65 [IC95%:1,00 -2,70] veces comparado con los escolares que presentaron un ICP bajo o alto. No se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la presencia de caries dental con el pH y flujo salival. Conclusiones: no se evidenció una asociación entre la caries dental y características salivales.
