Eleições brasileiras de 2014, selfies e a criminalização de sua propagação via eventos digitais: um estudo crítico-discursivo 2014 Brazilian elections and the criminalisation of propagation of selfies via digital events: a critical-discursive study
This paper focuses on the centrality of media practices to discuss in a transdisciplinary way how the Covid-19 crisis has been framed and communicated in Brazil across different media spaces, whereas the country became the second in the world with most deaths due to the spread of the Covid-19 infection. This discussion mobilises Foucauldian genealogical and critical discursive perspectives (Foucault, [1970]1981, p. 73) to create intelligibility about how domains of media power-knowledge, such as professional journalism and social media, generate textual trajectories, discursive-semiotic and epistemic disputes through (re-)framings. Based on oligoptic decisions (Latour, 2005, p. 182; Souza Júnior, 2020, pp. 59–64), the article explores a multimodal corpus of transmedia texts. 11 posts have been selected for discussion, since they pave the way for tracing a set of interconnected and (in-)visible elements about the corona crisis. In turn, this paper seeks to: (i) give visibility and qualitatively discuss some of the perspectives that have circulated across media spaces along with their related repertoires of biopolitical and geopolitical (re-)interpretation and (ii) expose the dynamics of power and resistance that emerge through pandemic frames, and how the latter communicate a social event like the Covid-19 crisis.
Bakhtin. Linguística Sistêmico-funcional. Produtividade funcional. Análise Crítica do Discurso. ABSTRACT:In this paper, we aim to analyse a popular Brazilian Internet memetic expression named "Que deselegante", its Internet users and their appraised, based on three key concepts: Appraisal Theory (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005); Dialogism and Otherness (BAKHTIN, 1997). Corpus Linguistics will be used as a methodology. After extracting a wordlist and a concordance list, we will analyse the following collocates (SHEPHERD, 2009): que deselegante + o/a/ isso, esse/a, este/ aquela/, ele/ela/, eu, você/vocês/, pessoas (eles/elas). At first, we will monitor users' patterns of evaluation and propagation of the memetic expression, regarding what/who is appraised. Afterwards, we will monitor the patterns of evaluation and propagation of "Que deselegante", regarding how the categories of Attitude are used to appraise others. If both patterns reveal nonalgorithmic replication processes, we conclude that memetic expressions evolve via functional productivity and therefore we suggest such kind of productivity as a new constitutive characteristic of the Internet meme phenomena propagation process.
ABSTRACT:Expanding propositions of Souza Júnior (2015c), the present paper analyses the propagation patterns of media/linguistic practices, encapsulated in selfies, which the Brazilian Electoral Justice termed a ‘forbidden act’ – whenever selfies were to be taken inside voting booths and/or posted online from there, during the 2014 Brazilian elections. Suggesting a bottom-up Linguistics and social-semiotics-oriented analysis, seeking to expand the investigative limits of a pictorial and Communication-oriented analysis presented in Shifman (2014), the paper, firstly, examined the selfie post that originated the digital event #selfienaurna (i.e. selfie in the voting booth). Secondly, the article defined that post’s initial compositional pattern in terms of: a) multimodal construction (its visual syntax); b) multimodal proposition (the purpose the purpose expressed through that picture). Then, the methodology of “propagatory analysis” (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2014) was used to confront the initial pattern with other occurrences found in the corpus. Carrying out a “relational analysis” (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2015a), this study investigated how the pattern that generated #selfienaurna would evolve, namely: mostly homogeneously – positioning found in Dawkins (1979, 1982); and followed by Recuero (2006) – or heterogeneously - proposition presented in Dennett (1995); and corroborated in Souza Júnior (2014, 2015a). Results showed that the propagation of #selfienaurna evolved mostly heterogeneously, regarding the items investigated.KEYWORDS: internet memes; selfie; Systemic-functional Linguistics; Multimodality and Visual Syntax; Social-semiotics and Bottom-up Analysis.
