Lymphocyte culture and partial karyotype of the marine turtle Caretta caretta (Testudines: Cheloniidae) in Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Over the past few years an important reduction in the number of nesting marine turtle Caretta caretta individuals has been registered in the Colombian Caribbean, raising the question of a possible extinction in the medium term. A conservation plan is needed. We studied the culture requirements for C. caretta lymphocytes and preliminary karyotype analysis for cytogenetic identification, immunological study and toxicology without the need to kill individuals. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 47 individuals in Santa Marta, Colombia and tests were made until optimal conditions were established for lymphocyte culture. The karyotype had 56 chromosomes, 32 macrochromosomes and 24 microchromosomes. An ideogram showed that C. caretta has four groups of chromosomes. Sexual chromosomes were not observed. These results do not coincide with the karyotype described from the Pacific (Japan). The present study is the first to include a complete description of the chromosome morphology of turtles from the Atlantic Ocean. it is possible that one of the adaptive strategies of this species is genetic interchange with other species of the family, producing viable hybrids. individuals in this study might be viable hybrids of C. caretta and further molecular studies are needed.

Oncidium ornithorhynchum, an epiphytic orchid characterized by erect, pyramidal inflorescences and small yellow flowers, is found in the northern Andes. However, according to the protologue, the type was collected in Mexico during Humboldt and Bonpland's American expedition (1800–1804). To clarify this problem, we extracted DNA from the ancient holotype. Short‐range PCRs for plastid (matK‐trnK, trnH‐psbA, ycf1) and nuclear (nrITS) markers were established and used to infer its phylogenetic placement with several related Central American and Andean orchid species. This provided well‐supported and close relationships of the holotype with other North Andean orchids, proving that the locus classicus was confounded. Also O. sotoanum from Mexico, with which O. ornithorhynchum has often been confused, was only distantly related.

Artículo de reflexión RESUMENIntroducción: el cordón umbilical es una estructura incomprendida a pesar de transportar todo lo que un feto necesita para crecer y subsistir. Cada una de sus características es relevante, y la principal es la longitud, la cual, cuando está alterada, se relaciona con pobre pronóstico neurológico y muerte fetal. Materiales y métodos: con base en la revisión de principios físicos, se proponen fórmulas que podrían explicar la importancia de la longitud del cordón por sus repercusiones hemodinámicas. Resultados: se analizó la circulación fetal desde el corazón hasta la red capilar vellositaria en el plato placentario y, por medio de fórmulas físicas, se plantea la importancia de la longitud del cordón en la perfusión fetal. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Despite its role of transporting all the things that a foetus needs to grow and survive, the umbilical cord is still poorly understood. All of its characteristics are relevant, and paramount among them is its length. When abnormal, length is associated with poor neurological prognosis and foetal demise. Materials and methods: Based on a review of physics principles, formulae were proposed in an attempt to explain the importance of umbilical cord length on the basis of its haemodynamic repercussions. Results: Foetal circulation was analysed from the heart to the placental villous capillaries and physics formulae were used to describe the importance of umbilical cord length in foetal perfusion. Conclusions: Clinical complications known to be associated with excess umbilical cord length were analysed from the physics perspective, and formulae were established for use with real data derived from foetal Doppler scans and umbilical cord measurements.

Objetivo: el objetivo general de esta investigación es hacer una aproximación para evaluar la asociación entre alteración del metabolismo de la homocisteínametionina y folato en embarazos complicados con restricción de crecimiento intrauterino (RCIU) idiopático, a través del estudio de los niveles de homocisteína pre y posparto, vitamina B12 y folato, así como las frecuencias alélicas y genotípicas de los polimorfismos genéticos de enzimas que participan en la vía metabólica de la homocisteína-metionina y folato en gestantes con embarazos complicados con RCIU idiopático y en condiciones fisiológicas en embarazo normal.Materiales y métodos: estudio piloto observacional analítico de tipo casos y controles. Se estudiaron 8 gestantes con embarazos con restricción de crecimiento intrauterino idiopático y 21 gestantes control con embarazos sin complicaciones y recién nacido sano. Se analizaron las concentraciones de folato, vitamina B12 y homocisteína en el tercer trimestre de embarazo, así como los niveles de homocisteína posparto. Se determinaron los genotipos de las gestantes para los polimorfismos MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, MTRR A66G, CBS 844ins68, CBS VNTR31pb, CBS C699T y CBS C1080T por medio de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) y polimorfismos de longitud de los fragmentos de restricción (RFLP).Resultados: los polimorfismos MTHFR C677T y el genotipo 18/18 del polimorfismo CBS VNTR- 31pb, de manera independiente y en coexistencia, se asociaron a niveles bajos de folato. Igualmente, el genotipo 18/18 del polimorfismo CBS VNTR- 31pb, solo y cuando coexistía con el polimorfismo MTHFR C677T, se asoció con RCIU idiopático.Conclusiones: el metabolismo de la homocisteínametionina y folato es importante para el crecimiento y desarrollo del embrión-feto. El compromiso de estas rutas metabólicas se asocia a complicaciones del embarazo como RCIU idiopático. Los resultados preliminares de este estudio deben incentivar el estudio del metabolismo de la homocisteínametionina y folato en complicaciones del embarazo como la RCIU, así como en condiciones fisiológicas en el embarazo normal en nuestra población.
