Geralmente podemos discernir uma contínua deflexão entre duas perspectivas epistemológicas no tratamento da temática da burocracia nos estudos organizacionais: i) em uma residem os estudos que homenageiam a concepção de burocracia como epítome da racionalidade formal e eficiência das ações na persecução de objetivos definidos; ii) na outra estão os estudiosos que analisam a burocracia privilegiando aspectos de poder, dominação, ideologia, alienação. Nesse diapasão, o objetivo deste artigo é identificar, na produção científica nacional hodierna em ciências da administração, as pesquisas que adotam os enfoques gerencialista ou crítico, nos sentidos aqui adotados, para a análise do fenômeno da burocracia, com especial ênfase na segunda corrente, e suas respectivas abordagens teóricas. Tal investida dar-se-á mediante levantamento da produção científica nacional publicada entre os anos 2000-2014 em 30 dos mais bem conceituados periódicos brasileiros do campo da administração e nos anais dos eventos promovidos pela Anpad. Os resultados indicam que há uma predominância dos estudos gerencialistas nas análises do fenômeno burocrático, embora não se possa falar em hegemonia. As abordagens teóricas têm se concentrado em temáticas como “burocracia, estado, política e sociedade”, “pós-burocracia, flexibilização e novas formas organizacionais”, “estrutura, controles e disfunções burocráticas”, “modelos de gestão pública” e “ideologia, poder, dominação e alienação”.
