A Amazônia Brasileira possui distintas manisfestações espaciais nas cidades. Nesse contexto, a compreensão dos fênomenos urbanos permite o reconhecimento das apropriações contemporâneas e possibilita a tentativa de apreensão do cotidiano. Esta pesquisa investiga o espaço público da cidade ribeirinha de Afuá (Arquipélago do Marajó, Estado do Pará, Brasil) que estrutura-se sob o regime de palafitas e não permite o tráfego de veículos motorizados. Busca-se a compreensão da apropriação da orla desta cidade pela população local através da noção de territorialidade. A pesquisa realizada possui caráter quantitativo e qualitativo mediante a aplicação de questionários, referências bibliográficas e levantamento de campo (técnicas de mapeamento do uso do solo, registros fotográficos e coleta de dados). As teorias de território, sobretudo, as de Raffestin (1993, 2003) permitiram a elaboração de análises estruturadas em dois aspectos: urbanos e socioterritoriais, que poderão servir de subsídios para elaboração de uma proposta de intervenção urbana a fim de promover o desenvolvimento local.
