L'article revient sur vingt ans de recherches INRP en didactique de l'oral à l'école. Il vise à faire émerger les grandes lignes de force, de la recherche GLO à la recherche VARIA.
L'inachèvement de la recherche VARIA souligne les difficultés d'une recherche didactique sur l'oral, en particulier dans une optique variationniste. Il reste cependant que ces vingt ans de recherches INRP ont élaboré les grands principes d'une éducation langagière éthique et démocratique.
Partant du constat qu'au sein des discours qui peuvent influer sur les pratiques d'enseignement de la grammaire à l'école, le rapport d'inspection reste peu étudié, l'article se pose deux questions. Quel rôle joue ce discours hiérarchique dans l'évolution des pratiques didactiques grammaticales : la contrarie-t-il, la suit-il, la conforte-t-il, l'impulse-t-il ? Quelles évolutions et quelles spécificités connait l'enseignement de la grammaire à l'école depuis une dizaine d'années, dont le rapport d'inspection serait un témoin et / ou un acteur ? L'article fait apparaitre que les cycles scolaires n'acceptent pas tous également les innovations. Il met aussi en évidence que les changements se produisent actuellement selon un processus continu, sans rupture chronologiquement identifiable. En outre, ce processus dépend, en fin de compte, de l'attitude de l'inspecteur vis à vis de la recherche, de quelque nature qu'elle soit.
