ABSTRACT In 1994, Météo-France will implement the first operational wind profiler which should replace in due course the balloon radio soundings of wind. This paper tries to answer to the basic questions relative to this new technology. The first part describes this instrument by emphasizing the improvements made relatively to INSU-Météo strato-tropospheric (ST) radars in the frame of current developments. Then this paper explains the method to measure wind data in the atmosphere through mere télédétection and to design the appropriate instrument for providing in real time the integrated wind profile. The algorithms implemented to this end have been checked during validation experiments realized with the INSU-Météo ST radar at CNRM in Toulouse, during Spring and Summer 1993. Results given in the last part should lead to an operational exploitation of the profiler before the end of 1994.L'année 1994 représente un tournant important dans l'histoire de la météorologie opérationnelle en France.
This report outlines the background and preliminary results of a permafrost study undertaken jointly by the Department of National Defence, the 1 ational Research Council of Canada and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources at Canadian Forces Station Alert, N.#.T. The project cornmenced 1n September, 1978 with the drilling of five shallow holes to maximum depths of 61m 1n areas that would dernonstrate the diverse nature of permafrost and the active laye r at Alert. Temperature cables were installed 1n the drillholes and frequent measurements are being taken by DND personnel. A geologic description of the drill core has been made and rneasurements of sorne physical properties of the core are in progress. This information will be used to study the thermal sensitivity of the terrain and to develop hitherto lacking thermal pararneters needed for engineering calculations of the response of the permafrost to future development in the Alert area. Such detailed thermal rneasurements have never been made this far north and a substantial contribution to the scientific knowledge of high latitude permafrost will result.
