The purpose of this study was to determine nutrition knowledge and behavior of division IA college athletes and to compare such knowledge and behavior with data from a similar survey conducted in 1992. Surveys with distribution instructions and statements of confidentiality were sent randomly to strength and conditioning coordinators (SCCs) at 16 universities. Survey results indicated that women (60.6%) received more nutrition information than men (49.5). SCCs and athletic trainers were the primary nutrition sources for men, whereas university classes and nutritionists were primary for women. Much information was obtained from arguable sources such as magazines, family members, and coaches. Only 3, 11.7, and 29.5% correctly identified recommended percents of total calorie intake for protein, fat, and carbohydrates, respectively. Thirty-seven percent correctly identified the role of vitamins and 54.4% for protein. Creatine and vitamin/mineral supplements were the most common for men and women, respectively. Despite previous recommendations regarding nutrition education of high-level athletes, diminutive changes have occurred in the past 6 years.

Acute high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL) changes were determined in 18 healthy college aged-men completing two-counterbalanced running trials at different exercise intensities: trial 1 at 70 % lactate threshold (LT) (372.5 +/- 28.9 kcal); trial 2 at LT intensity (365.9 +/- 75.9 kcal). For each trial, blood samples were collected at pre-exercise (baseline), 15 min post-exercise (15 m PE) and 24 hours post-exercise (24 h). Serum samples were analyzed for HDL/HDL 2 /HDL 3 subfraction, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), total cholesterol (TC), free cholesterol (FC), cholesterol ester, and triglycerides (TG). In addition, capillary blood samples were collected for analysis of blood lactate concentrations during incremental test to determine LT. All samples were corrected for plasma volume changes and compared to pre-exercise (baseline). In assessing the lipid and lipoprotein variables, the significant increase in HDL (p < 0.05) at the 24 h was due to the increase in both HDL 2 and HDL 3. The increase in 15 m PE TC at the LT intensity occurred while the decreases in 24 h TG and VLDL concentrations at the LT intensity occurred at different time periods, respectively. These decreases in the concentrations of TG and VLDL were significantly different, contributing to change in 24 h HDL concentration. No significant difference was determined in changes of HDL over time ratios of FC/CE and HDL 2 /HDL 3. Therefore, the significant increase in 24 h HDL at LT intensity was potentially due to increases in both HDL 2 and HDL 3 subfractions even though 24 h FC was increased significantly. Exercise at LT intensity might favourably alter the lipid profile as demonstrated in 24 h HDL concentration in combination with decreases in TG and VLDL at 24 h post-exercise. Consequently, the LT intensity might appear to be the threshold intensity of acute aerobic exercise (expending 350 kcal) necessary to promote a significant increase in HDL.

Objectives To help athletic trainers promote a “food-first” philosophy to support health and performance, understand federal and sport governing body rules and regulations regarding dietary supplements and banned substances, and become familiar with reliable resources for evaluating the safety, purity, and efficacy of dietary supplements. Background The dietary supplement industry is poorly regulated and takes in billions of dollars per year. Uneducated athletes need to gain a better understanding of the safety, eligibility, and efficacy concerns associated with choosing to take dietary supplements. The athletic trainer is a valuable athletic team member who can help in the educational process. In many cases, athletic trainers are asked to help evaluate the legality, safety, and efficacy of dietary supplements. For this position statement, our mission is to provide the athletic trainer with the necessary resources for these tasks. Recommendations Proper nutrition and changes in the athlete's habitual diet should be considered first when improved performance is the goal. Athletes need to understand the level of regulation (or lack thereof) governing the dietary supplement industry at the international, federal, state, and individual sport-participation levels. Athletes should not assume a product is safe simply because it is marketed over the counter. All products athletes are considering using should be evaluated for purity (ie, truth in labeling), safety, and efficacy.
