Template syntheses based on tris (ethane-1,2-diamine)cobalt(III) lead to cobalt(III) complexes of cage hexamines of the ' sarcophagine ' type ( sarcophagine = sar = 3,6,10,13,16,19- hexaazabicyclo [6.6.6] icosane ) rapidly and in high yield. Reduction of these species to their cobalt(II) forms enables the ligands to be removed in concentrated acids at elevated temperatures, and in hot aqueous solutions containing excess cyanide ion. The free sarcophagine and 1,8-diaminosarcophagine [(NH2)2sar or diamsar] ligands are strong bases, accepting up to four and five protons, respectively, in aqueous solution. In chloride medium, I = 1.0, at 298 K, pK1 = 11.95, pK2 = 10.33, pK3 = 7.17, pK4 ≈ 0 for sarcophagine , and pK1 = 11.44, pK2 = 9.64, pK3 = 6.49, pK4 = 5.48, pK5 ≈ 0 for diaminosarcophagine , with very similar values being found for triflate medium. Crystal structure determinations for both free bases, the chloride, sulfate, perchlorate and nitrate salts of diamsar , the complex of zinc chloride with sar, and the magnesium nitrate complex with diamsar show remarkably small variations in the cavity defined by the bicyclic ligands, though relatively subtle bond length and bond angle changes can be rationalized in terms of the effects of proton and metal ion binding. Exhaustive methylation of sarcophagine produces the highly lipophilic, hexatertiary base hexamethylsarcophagine , which, in the solid state, adopts quite different conformations and nitrogen-atom configurations to those of sar itself. All the ligands rapidly form metal ion complexes of generally exceptional kinetic and thermodynamic stability.

Reaction of mercury(ti) acetate with the 1,3-aIternate conformer of ptert-butyltetramercaptocalix[4]arene, obtained by a highly efficient synthesis starting from p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, leads to a binuclear complex in which both mercury ions are linearly coordinated to two arenethiolate groups.

Tetra- and hexa-nuclear mercury(II) complexes have been obtained from tetrathiacalix[4]arene and tetramercaptotetrathiacalix[4]arene, respectively, and structurally characterised in the solid state; the complexes provide new digonal and trigonal receptors of the koiland type.

Determination of the crystal structure of the mono-caesium derivative of the macrocyclic tetraphenol p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene shows the metal atom to be bound within the cup formed by the ligand; the metal is thereby in much closer proximity to the aromatic carbon atoms than to the phenolic oxygens, indicating that it is involved in polyhapto bonding to a delocalised anionic ligand.

Determinations of the crystal structures of complexes of the alkali metal ions with, in the case of Li, the dianion and, in the cases Na-Cs, the monoanion of p-tert-butyltetrathiacalix[4]arene have shown that both the sulfur atoms which form part of the macrocyclic ring, as well as the pendent phenolic/phenoxide oxygen donor atoms, are involved in coordination to these metals. Although the Li and Na complex structures are similar to those of the corresponding complexes of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, there is no similarity in the structures of the Cs complexes, with the present structure showing no evidence of polyhapto Cs(+)-pi interactions. Instead, the complex crystallizes as a ligand-bridged (S-, O-donor) aggregate of three Cs ions, solvent molecules, and four calixarenes, somewhat like the Rb complex, though here four Rb ions are present, and higher in aggregation than the K+ complex, where two K+ ions are sandwiched between two calixarene moieties. The triethylammonium complex of the thiacalixarene monoanion, though formally analogous in that it involves a monocation, has a simpler structure than any of the alkali metal derivatives, based formally on proton coordination (H-bonding). However, interestingly, it can be isolated in both solvated (dmf, dmso) and unsolvated forms, as indeed can the "free", p-tert-butyltetrathiacalix[4]arene ligand itself.
