von JACEK KORDELDer Aufsatz setzt sich zum Ziel, die kursächsische Außenpolitik im Zeitraum nach dem Tod Augusts III. und dem darauffolgenden Zerfall der polnisch-sächsischen Personalunion (1763) zu analysieren. Anhand ausgewählter Aspekte wird die kursächsische Polen-, Pfründen-und Handelspolitik vor dem Hintergrund der Beziehungen des Kurfürstentums Sachsen mit Österreich und Preußen dargestellt. Die Forschungsfrage lautet: Welche Möglichkeiten und Chancen hatte ein mittelgroßer Reichsstand, angesichts des preußisch-österreichischen Antagonismus und eines immer schwächeren Einflusses Frankreichs im Reich, seine politischen Absichten und Pläne zu verwirklichen?Der im Februar 1763 unterschriebene Hubertusburger Frieden sowie der in dasselbe Jahr fallende Tod Augusts III. (5. Oktober 1763) und Heinrich von Brühls (29. Oktober 1763) wie auch der Zerfall der polnisch-sächsischen Personalunion gelten in der sächsischen Geschichtsschreibung als Zäsuren von epochaler Bedeutung. Horst Schlechte hielt in seinem Werk über den Wiederaufbau Sachsens nach den Verheerungen des Siebenjährigen Krieges fest: Sächsische Reformer "suchten das Interesse des Staates weniger mit den Mitteln der auswärtigen Politik und nicht im Intrigenspiel der europäischen Kabinette, sondern vielmehr durch planmäßige und beharrliche Förderung aller wichtigeren Zweige der Landesökonomie zu wahren." 1 Die sächsische Historiografie kam zu der Einschätzung, dass die neuen Eliten, die nach 1763 die Politik bestimmten, für den Wiederaufbau ihres Landes auf die "von Phantasie und romanhaft-romantischen Vorstellungen geprägte Außenpolitik der Vorfahren" 2 hätten verzichten und die Hoffnungen auf die Erneuerung der Personalunion mit der polnisch-litauischen Adelsrepublik hätten aufgeben sollen. Stattdessen hätten sie sich viel stärker auf Staats-und Wirtschaftsreformen konzentrieren sollen.
