La deficiencia de boro (B) en sistemas forestales ha sido reportada en diferentes especies de pino y eucalipto, verificándose importantes mejoras en la producción y/o calidad de madera, con el agregado de este nutriente. La baja retranslocación del B dentro de la planta hace necesario un aporte constante para satisfacer las demandas del cultivo. Al ser un nutriente muy poco retenido por el suelo está sujeto a pérdidas por lixiviación. El uso de fertilizantes solubles brinda una solución a corto plazo, muy dependiente de situaciones ambientales, mientras que las fuentes de liberación lenta permitirían un aporte más constante y por más tiempo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la disponibilidad en el tiempo del B proveniente de diferentes fuentes, a través de cambios en las concentraciones foliares de Eucalyptus globulus (Labille) y Eucalyptus grandis (Hill ex Maiden), en distintas situaciones de suelos y manejo. Se instalaron tres experimentos de campo de comparación de fuentes boratadas (borato de sodio vs ulexita), aplicadas en cobertura, a árboles con seis meses de transplantados, en distintos sitios experimentales de Uruguay. A los 6, 12 y 24 meses luego de la fertilización se evaluaron las concentraciones foliares de B. La ulexita mostró una alta solubilidad y baja residualidad, con similar eficiencia que el borato de sodio como aporte de B para los eucaliptos. La dosis de B aplicada (4 g de B por planta) parecería ser suficiente para alcanzar niveles foliares que podrían considerarse de suficiencia, sin llegar a niveles de toxicidad.
La información disponible a nivel nacional y mundial sobre requerimientos nutricionales de Lotus corniculatus L. es escasa. Por eso, la propuesta de trabajo fue conocer las concentraciones de nutrientes de este cultivo en Uruguay, detectar situaciones con mayor probabilidad de deficiencias y establecer relaciones con características del suelo. Durante tres años se realizó un relevamiento nutricional de lotus, tomando muestras de suelo y planta de 179 establecimientos de todo el país. Los suelos se agruparon en 11 zonas diferentes. Los rangos de concentraciones de macronutrientes en planta fueron: 1.51 -4.15% N; 0.11 -0.38% P; 0.81 -3.30% K; 0.34 -1.84% Ca; 0.18 -0.59% Mg y 0.12 -0.36% S, y los de micronutrientes 4 -58; 39 -350; 31 -207 y 12 -115 mg. kg -1 de Cu, Fe, Mn y Zn, respectivamente. Los nutrientes limitantes más frecuentes fueron P, S y K, con un 72, 16 y 14% de los sitios con concentraciones en planta inferiores a las tomadas como referencia. La alta frecuencia del P como limitante sugiere la necesidad de un mejor manejo de la fertilización fosfatada. Las diferencias observadas en S se explican por los procesos de ganancia y pérdida de materia orgánica en nuestros suelos. En algunos suelos sobre Formación Tacuarembó, Cretácico, Planicies y lomadas del Este o Basalto, sería esperable respuesta a la fertilización con K. Las concentraciones más bajas de Mg en planta correspondieron a suelos ricos en K o pobres en Mg (Formación Fray Bentos). No se encontraron evidencias de que otros nutrientes pudieran ser limitantes de la producción de Lotus en Uruguay.
