Frequency translation of a microwave signal with low spurious signal generation can be accomplished by serrodyne modulation of the signal phase. A digital phase shifter provides an approximation to the serrodyne (or sawtooth) function. This paper presents the analysis and results of a serrodyne modulator, composed of a monolithic five-bit phase shifter and digital control circuits. Carrier and spur suppression of more than 22 dB have been achieved from 7 to 12 GHz over the temperature range -5OoC to +95OC.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
