A new process for photo-grade hydroquinone is based on selective hydroxylation of phenol by hydrogen peroxide. Research has been conducted to find conditions in which phenol is oxidized without degradation of the more oxidizable products. We have found a single-step process to produce, in an economical and nonpolluting way, hydroquinone and pyrocatechol. Change of catalyst produces change in molar ratio of products but keeps orthopara selectivity and high yields.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
