Hommel. 9 Methode, die sich von der Dnrstelhin2;sweise der Ägypter sehr unterscheidet, die aber die Assyrier auch bei anderen Tieren, z. I?. an den l^einen der Pferde und Hunde zur Verwendung brachten. Die schönsten Bilder dieses Wildstieres finden sich unter den Skulpturen der Paläste assyrischer Kiinige, vor allem dem des Assuniässirpah. Wir sehen hier, wie der König, auf seinem dreispännigen Wagen stellend, einen auf ihn einstürmenden Stier am Hörne fasst und ihm mit der Gewandtheit eines spanischen Espada das Kurzschwert ins Genick stösst. (Tafel I, Fig. 2.) Wahrlich eine ergötzliche Scene für einen jagdfreudigen Kiinig und wert, verewigt zu sein ! Ein anderer Stier ist von Pfeilen durchbohrt zu Boden gesunken. Hinter dem Wagen des Herrschers folgt ein berittener Krieger, wie es scheint der Bogen-und Kiicherträger des Königs, mit einem Reserveross. Er reitet nacli Weiberai t.-Solch ein gewaltiger Stier war es wohl wert, dass man dem Herrn der Götter oder doch Xindar, dem Gotte der Jagd, dafür dankte, und auf seinen Bogen gestützt, bringt Assurnassirpal ein feierliches Trankopfer über dem erlegten Stiere und lässt sich dabei von seinem Eunuchen einen Sonnenschirm über da^Haupt halten.^) Dass die hier dargestellten Wildrinder wirklich rimi genannt wurden, geht aus den Benennungen der Bilder, wie aus der Besclireibung der Zerstiirung elnmirisclier Tempel durch Assurbanipal hervor. 2) Die allei'besten Bilder des Wildstieres werden uns auf der Bronzeschale gegeben, die Layard publiziert, sowie auf dem Relief, wo ein auf zwei Rossen reitender Krieger den Wildstier verfolgt. Besonders nach dem erstgenannten Bilde ist kein Zweifel möglich, dass das Wildrrnd der Bos primigenius Boj. gewesen sein muss. Wir sehen ilin teils durch den Wald schi'eiten, teils von Löwen angegriffen. Die gewaltige Gestalt und der reine Rindercharakter kommen hier weit mehr zur Geltung als auf den Skulpturen, wo der Bildhauer viele wichtige Punkte nicht so anzugeben vermochte. Trefflich illustriert auch das erwähnte Relief das Tier, indem es zugleich die Behaarung des Körpers andeutet, woraus hervorgeht, dass weder an einen Büffel noch an einen Wisent gedacht werden kann. Die Gestalt des Tieres ist etwa folgende : Der Kopf ist nicht gerade gross. Die Stirn-Xasenlinie wird von den Orbitalwülsten etwas überragt. Die Augen sind gross. Das Horn scheint meist länger als der Kopf"*) und am Grund bedeutend verdickt. Wichtig ist die Darstellung des sehr stark entwickelten Unterkiefers, dessen aufsteigender Ast, den Bildern nach, recht schief nach hinten gerichtet ist. Unter dem Halse findet sich eine Wamme.
