SUMMARY Cerebral angiograms of 108 patients with mental retardation have been compared with those of the control series of angiograms in the fetus and in patients at different ages, reported in Part I of this study. Internal carotid artery. The Internal carotid artery showed a tendency to be longer compared with the maximum diameter of the skull and more bent in those with the most severe mental retardation, and the ‘open’ type of carotid siphon was slightly more common in the mentally retarded group than in the controls. Anterior cerebral artery. In the severely retarded patients, some anterior cerebral arteries showed an arc‐like course similar to that seen in the normal fetus. Some of the brains of the children with mental retardation seemed to be still at a developmental stage. Middle cerebral artery. The angle of the middle cerebral artery showed no characteristic tendency. In contrast with the controls series, the angles of many of the mentally retarded group were greater than 50°. Contralateral filling. In contrast with the control series, there was a lesser degree of contralateral filling of cerebral and posterior cerebral arteries. Of the 108 mentally retarded patients, 44 showed various changes in the cerebral arteries which, while clearly discernible from the controls, could not be expressed by measurement or statistical analysis.
