The efforts to increase the potential PM market [makes necessary to accept new challenges to develop new products. To address this question, we can consider modifying the pores system or the material composition and at same time, the cost of the alloying elements and the compromise between strength, tolerances and cost. The present study examines the sintering behavior and effect of manganese addition, both mechanically-blended and mechanically alloyed, on Cr-Mo low alloyed steels to enhance the mechanical properties. Mn sublimation during sintering results in some specific phenomena to occur which facilitate the sintering of alloying elements with high oxygen affinity. To benefit from the Mn sublimation effects, small Mn particles must be homogenously added in order to increase the specific surface available to sublimate. First, the milling time is optimized to attain a master alloy with 50% of Mn that is diluted in Fe-1.5Cr-0.2Mo water atomized prealloyed powder by normal mixing. These mixtures were pressed to a green density of 7.1 g/cm3 and sintered at 1120 °C in 90N2-10H2 atmosphere. The resulting mechanical properties and the microstructures are discussed considering the high energy stored in the master alloy which favors the mass transport mechanism during sintering.
Because of the combination of strength and toughness, much interest has been focused on austempered sintered low-alloyed steels. Implementation of this treatment for powder metal components has been limited by interaction between the open porosity of the material and the cooling fluid. This work discusses the influence of different austempering environments and parameters on the microstructure and, as a consequence, on the final properties. The sintered steels selected are based on two different prealloyed powders, Fe-1.5Cr-0.2Mo and Fe-1.5Mo, with the addition of 0.6 wt pct graphite. Green samples with medium density (7.3 g/cm 3 ) were sintered at 1393 and 1523 K (1120 and 1250°C) to ensure a decrease in open porosity. The austempering treatment process requires austenitizing at 1133 K (860°C) for 2 hours followed by quenching in different baths at 563 K (290°C). The final strength and ductility are dependent upon the relative amounts of ferrite, pearlite, and bainite phases present in the austempered steel. Discussion of the experimental results compares the as-sintered and the austempered observations as well as the relationship between mechanical properties and the phases present in the final microstructures.
The economic importance of the corrosion and wear of refractory materials is indisputable because these processes determine the viability of any hightemperature liner used in metallurgical processes. The degradation mechanism of lining materials (refractory bricks) in contact with corrosive gases can be studied by examining the penetration rate or the chemical corrosion that results from the circulation of the atmosphere over the refractory material (by diffusional and convective transport). During the sintering of steel containing Mn, the high vapour pressure of Mn enables its sublimation during thermal cycling; therefore, Mn is incorporated into the sintering atmosphere. Although the diffusion of Mn in steel samples is beneficial, the presence of Mn in a sintering atmosphere can modify the composition of refractory components. As a result of atmosphere-refractory interactions, a new phase is formed. In this study, the changes in refractory materials as a function of exposure time to atmospheres containing Mn (g) at the most common sintering temperature, 1120 1C, were investigated. The microstructural changes in the refractory materials and the consequences of the presence of Mn (g) were analysed using optical microscopy, electron microscopy with X-ray (EDS) microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
Study of the degradation of the alumina refractory during the sintering process of steels modified with Mn.The present work studies the degradation of the refractory bricks for sintering furnace, when steels with Mn are sintered. Due to the high P vapour of Mn and the standard sintering atmospheres for this type of steels, Mn sublimates during the thermal cycle. This sublimation results in a gaseous phase beneficial to the diffusion processes related to the sintering of the steel but it could also alter the refractory's composition. It is known that in the corrosion of refractory ceramics are many the individual processes involved, but always based on the physical-chemical properties of the corrosive agent, as well as the intrinsic properties of the refractory such as the interconnected porosity and the presence of multiple phases (1). Independently of the operating mechanism, new compounds can be produced altering the refractory behaviour, accelerating the ageing and diminishing its working conditions. For this matter, it is studied the evolution of the refractory tiles with the exposure time to Mn containing atmospheres at a standard sintering temperature, 1120 ºC. Microstructural changes in the refractory elements, as a consequence of the presence of Mn (g) are analysed through optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with XR microanalyses (EDS), XR diffraction and XRF fluorescence studies. Keywords: Corrosion, Refractory, Alumina, Steel, Manganese.
