The sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, congo red (Bennhold's, 1922, method, confirmed by birefringence), methyl violet (Fernando's, 1961, modification), and thioflavine-T (G. T. Gurr, London) : to ensure uniformity they were stained by the same technician using the same staining solutions throughout.
The thioflavine-T method(1) Take sections down to water, stain with alum-haematoxylin for 10 min. and differentiate in acid-alcohol for about 5 sec. This blocks nuclear autofluorescence.
