Summary
The study aimed to determine the pathogenic properties for calves of Ureaplasma strains, taking into account the site of their isolation. One strain was isolated from the lung and another from the nasal mucosa of two different pneumonic calves. The third strain originated from the semen of a healthy bull. As the result of the experimental infection of conventionally raised calves of about 6 weeks of age differences in the pathogenicity of the 3 Ureaplasma strains were demonstrated. The most pathogenic was the strain isolated from pathologically changed lung tissue, next the strain isolated from the nasal mucosa. The least pathogenic was the strain isolated from the semen. The nasal mucosa offered usually the same possibility to reisolate Ureaplasmas from the infected calves as tracheal, bronchial and pulmonary tissues. The metabolic inhibition test (MIT) enabled the detection of Ureaplasma antibodies in infected animals. The highest titres were observed in animals infected with the strain isolated from the lung and the lowest in calves infected with the strain from bull semen. The three investigated strains were not related antigenically in the MIT. No anti‐Ureaplasma antibodies were detected in non‐infected calves. This indicates the value of the MIT in the detection of infected animals. The participation of Ureaplasmas in the aetiology of enzootic pneumonia of calves was confirmed.
