Einleitung Die Herzfrequenz wird durch einen komplexen Regelkreis gesteuert, bei dem hemmende und erregende Einflüsse zu einem nichtlinearen System gekoppelt sind. Bei solchen Systemen führt eine kleine Änderung der Randbedingungen oft zu vollkommen unterschiedlichen Trajektorien. Im Fall der Herzfrequenz führt die Kopplung verschiedener Einflußfaktoren (mittlerer arterieller Blutdruck, Sauerstoffsättigung und Temperatur des Blutes, etc.) zu einem augenscheinlich stochastischen Verlauf der eine Beurteilung des zugrundeliegenden deterministischen Verhaltens erschwert. Es empfiehlt sich daher, Parameter zu berechnen, die eine Aussage über die Komplexität der Herzrate und damit über die globale Stabilität der Trajektorien des nichtlinearen Systems Herz im Phasenraum erlauben. So gelang es Skinner et al. mit Hilfe der punktweisen Korrelationsdimension Änderungen in der Herzfrequenzdynamik während Ischämie (2) und vor Kammerflimmem (3) nachzuweisen.
