El presente trabajo se basó en la fabricación y pruebas para implantar tornillos ortopédicos descritos en la norma ISO 5835:1991 y fabricados a partir de hueso bovino liofilizado, mediante la comparación con el proceso comúnmente utilizado por cirujanos para implantar tornillos metálicos comerciales. Se presenta un procedimiento para implantar los tornillos de hueso liofilizado describiendo las etapas básicas: hidratar el tornillo en solución, evitar cualquier tipo de flexión en el tornillo por parte del cirujano, roscar el agujero por varias ocasiones con la ayuda del machuelo y limpiar el agujero para poder insertar el tornillo con la ayuda del torquímetro médico. Este procedimiento se verificó al implantar un tornillo como parte de la fijación de implantes de fascia lata, para la reparación extraarticular de ruptura de ligamento cruzado anterior en un paciente canino y un felino. Se tuvo como resultado una osteointegración total de los implantes óseos utilizados.
