X‐ray diffraction at Bragg angles of about π/2 is studied by the conventional and the extended dynamical theory. The diffraction patterns according to both the theories are exactly the same if the incidence parameter α of the conventional theory is corrected. In the symmetric Bragg case the maximum halfwidth of the diffraction pattern is given by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sqrt {2|\chi _h |} $\end{document} belonging to a Bragg angle \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \theta _{\rm B} = \pi /2 - \sqrt {|\chi _0 | + |\chi _h |} $\end{document}·(χ0,χh are the Fourier coefficients of the susceptibility.) It is shown, that all results can be understood by considering the dispersion surface of the fourth‐order secular equation in the nonabsorbing case.
Tho influence of the dispersion and vertical divergence on the half width of the reflection curves was investigated using a double-crystal arrangement where the second crystal could be rotated about an axis parallel to the beam reflected by the first crystal. The experimentally measured dependence of the half width of the reflection ('urves on the angle of rotation p is accurately confirmed by geometrical considerations.
The intensity of the specularly reflected X-ray beam is investigated in the case of grazing incidence simultaneously satisfying a coplanar Bragg-case diffraction. Fresnel's formula and the extended dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction give identical results if the specular reflection is not influenced by diffraction. The modification of the specular intensity by simultaneous diffraction can be described by using an extended dynamical theory. This intensity modulation of the specular beam is calculated and experimentally verified by measurements with synchrotron radiation in the cases of strong and weak absorption. The results can be interpreted as a variation of the refractive index by simultaneous diffraction.
The deviation from the Bragg law and the incident half width wi of the diffraction pattern, which can be obtained by numerical and geometrical extension of the dynamical theory of X‐ray diffraction, are compared together. An analytical expression for the emergent half width we is derived. It is shown, that we can be calculated according to the conventional theory from we = bwi (b is the asymmetry factor). The relation is valid also, when the incident geometrical Bragg position is in the range of specular reflection, but in this case b and wiconv are only fictive quantities.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
