International collaboration on development of a stellarator confinement database has progressed. More than 3000 data points from nine major stellarator experiments have been compiled. Robust dependences of the energy confinement time on the density and the heating power have been confirmed. Dependences on other operational parameters, i.e. the major and minor radii, magnetic field and the rotational transform , have been evaluated using inter-machine analyses. In order to express the energy confinement in a unified scaling law, systematic differences in each subgroup are quantified. An a posteriori approach using a confinement enhancement factor on ISS95 as a renormalizing configuration-dependent parameter yields a new scaling expression ISS04; . Gyro–Bohm characteristic similar to ISS95 has been confirmed for the extended database with a wider range of plasma parameters and magnetic configurations than in the study of ISS95. It has also been discovered that there is a systematic offset of energy confinement between magnetic configurations, and its measure correlates with the effective helical ripple of the external stellarator field. Stellarator configurations with reactor relevant energetic particle losses are constructed by simultaneously optimizing for quasisymmetry and an analytically derived metric ( $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{c}$ ), which attempts to align contours of the second adiabatic invariant, $J_{\Vert }$ with magnetic surfaces. Results show that with this optimization scheme it is possible to generate quasihelically symmetric equilibria on the scale of ARIES-CS which completely eliminate all collisionless alpha particle losses within normalized radius $r/a=0.3$ . We show that the best performance is obtained by reducing losses at the trapped–passing boundary. Energetic particle transport can be improved even when neoclassical transport, as calculated using the metric $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{\text{eff}}$ , is degraded. Several quasihelically symmetric equilibria with different aspect ratios are presented, all with excellent energetic particle confinement.

Differences in the electron particle and thermal transport are reported between plasmas produced in a quasihelically symmetric (QHS) magnetic field and a configuration with the symmetry broken. The thermal diffusivity is reduced in the QHS configuration, resulting in higher electron temperatures than in the nonsymmetric configuration for a fixed power input. The density profile in QHS plasmas is centrally peaked, and in the nonsymmetric configuration the core density profile is hollow. The hollow profile is due to neoclassical thermodiffusion, which is reduced in the QHS configuration.

Gyrokinetic simulations of plasma microturbulence in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment are presented. Using plasma profiles relevant to experimental operation, four dominant drift wave regimes are observed in the ion wavenumber range, which are identified as different flavors of density-gradient-driven trapped electron modes. For the most part, the heat transport exhibits properties associated with turbulence driven by these types of modes. Additionally, long-wavelength, radially localized, nonlinearly excited coherent structures near the resonant central flux surface, not predicted by linear simulations, can further enhance flux levels. Integrated heat fluxes are compatible with experimental observations in the corresponding density gradient range. Despite low shearing rates, zonal flows are observed to regulate turbulence but can be overwhelmed at higher density gradients by the long-wavelength coherent structures.
