This paper looks at the various methods of flat slab design as prepared in a consultant's office, while also marking the hundredth anniversary of the first published account of the construction of a flat slab. It examines the practicalities of the recommendations available in BS 8110 and indicates areas where further research is required. Current analysis methods are compared for accuracy and ease of use, and reference is made to how these methods have evolved. This development of flat slab design and analysis methods will continue; views on this future trend are presented.
