This article investigates the concept of rhetorical style and how it relates to the use of electronic mail (e-mail). Rhetorical style was measured by RHETSEN2. RHETSEN2 identifies three dominant communication orientations: noble self, rhetorical sensitive, and rhetorical reflector. Perceptions and uses of e-mail were tapped by a survey instrument that explored confidentiality, usefulness, expression of anger, and harm. The findings revealed that individuals with rhetorical sensitive or rhetorical reflector orientation perceived e-mail in significantly different ways from individuals with a noble self orientation. Additionally, the findings indicate the need for training in the use of e-mail for all orientations, especially in the areas of confidentiality and the expression of anger. Then past 20 years have seen a technological revolution for organizational communica-1 tion (Fulk, Schmitz, & Ryu, 1995) similar to the mass communication revolution that occurred between 1920 and 1950. With organizations adopting new media-such as electronic mail (e-mail), intraorganizational video, groupware, and audiotex in rapid successiona growing body of research is developing on the uses and effects of computer-mediated communication. Various theoretical approaches-such as social presence (Ricesocial influences (Fulk et al., 1995)-have been employed to assess how computer-mediated communication channels differ in the extent to which they can overcome the constraints placed on communication by time (synchronous vs. asynchronous), distance (availability of social context cues), and permanence (or evanescence). Research findings suggest computer-mediated communication channels transmit social, symbolic, and nonverbal cues of human communication and convey equivocal or ambiguous information with differing degrees
The article examines the work of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth in relation to disabled veterans. It explores how the founders of the motion study method affected vocational rehabilitation of the handicapped. This article addresses the ideological paradox faced by the Gilbreths in dealing with handicapped workers and identifies the long-lasting effects of their efforts on governmental policies, employer hiring practices, and new product innovations. Through their efforts, the Gilbreths demonstrated how handicapped workers could become productive members of the community.
