The relative importance of bond strength, steric effects, and polarity in determining the rate and orientation of free radical substitution and free radical addition reactions is considered. The factors which control substitution reactions (radical transfer reactions) are gathered together as five "rules", and a similar five "rules" are proposed for addition reactions. These "rules" are shown to be special cases of two ''laws'' which govern all free radical reactions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
