RESUMO: O desafio da agricultura irrigada é garantir um suprimento adequado e regular de alimentos para a sociedade com o menor consumo de água possível. A alocação de água para fins agrícola gera benefícios sociais, econômicos e ambientais que não são apropriados somente por um usuário, mas por toda a sociedade. O manejo da irrigação, embora pareça ser uma atividade simples, é bastante complexo. Ele depende da interação do clima, solo, planta, e do próprio sistema de irrigação. As variações temporais das condições climáticas e de solo dificultam a avaliação experimental antecipada dos efeitos de cada um desses fatores envolvidos. Embora existam vários modelos que se destinam ao manejo da irrigação, ainda há uma carência por modelos menos complexos que possibilitem simular estratégias de irrigação, para fins de planejamento de uso da água, de modo a subsidiar tomadas de decisão. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi desenvolver um modelo de simulação de estratégias de irrigação (MSEI). O modelo utiliza informações básicas do solo, clima e planta. Ele possibilita simular diferentes estratégias de manejo de irrigação. O manejo pode ser conduzido em base diária, possibilitando a tomada de decisão sobre quanto e quando irrigar, ou pode-se trabalhar com séries climáticas históricas, visando o planejamento. O software foi desenvolvido utilizando o ambiente de programação Borland Delphi 7.0. O modelo foi aplicado para definir estratégias de irrigações na bacia hidrográfica do rio Buriti Vermelho. Os resultados foram utilizados para avaliar a possibilidade de se utilizar água subterrânea para expandir a irrigação na bacia.
