A generalization of the iterative physical‐optics (IPO) method is presented here in order to extend its scope of application to cavities with nonperfectly conducting walls. The behavior of the method is illustrated for the problem of a parallel‐plate waveguide. A pictorial display of the energy flow inside the waveguide is obtained, allowing us to attempt a deep understanding of the method, illustrating its behavior with the number of iterations, and demonstrating its great accuracy by comparison with ray‐based and modal reference solutions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A comparison of different testing procedures for subdomain moment‐method formulations for arbitrarily shaped bodies, including attached wires, is presented here. It is shown that an accurate evaluation of the impedance matrix elements leads to important benefits over the conventional procedures. Otherwise, the use of an adaptively generated mesh—more refined nearby the sources—is shown to reduce the total number of unknowns, and therefore, the computational cost for a fixed problem. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
