Abstract. 2014 The magnetic instabilities (flux jumps) have been studied experimentally in a solid cylinder made of a dirty type II superconductor. The critical current density being assumed any sort of function j(B, T) of the magnetic induction B and of the temperature T, a theoretical calculation is made of the electrical field at each point of the superconducting cylinder, when it is subjected to a slowly increasing external magnetic field parallel to the axis of the cylinder. It is shown that the equations obtained make it possible to obtain from the expérimental electrical field values the magnetic induction distribution in the superconductor after a flux jump, as well as the critical current density. The experiments were carried out on a cylinder of Nb-40 % Ti immersed in liquid helium (2 K ~ T0 ~ 4.2 K) or in helium gas under weak pressure (4.2 K ~ T0 ~ 6 K). The resultant distributions of magnetic induction following a flux jump prove the importance of the heat transfer between the superconductor and the bath. In addition, the experiments allow the determination of the magnetic field value where the first flux jump Hfj occurs and the distribution of the maximum temperature reached at each point on the cylinder during a limited flux jump. The results obtained are compared with the various theories previously proposed.
