Des solutions alternatives aux procédés existants de traitement de l'eau sont développés en prévision d'une plus sévère réglementation concernant la protection de l'environnement. La photocatalyse hétérogène sur le dioxyde de titane se révèle comme une solution potentielle pour l'éli-mination de composés organiques [1,2]. Le principe de la méthode repose sur la production de radicaux lorsque le photocatalyseur, semi-conducteur, est irradié par des photons d'énergie égale ou supérieure à l'énergie de sa bande interdite [3,4]. Les radicaux formés, très réactifs, tels que HO 2 0 et OH 0 , induisent alors des réactions d'oxydation de molé-cules organiques par hydroxylation ou des réactions de décarboxylation [5][6].Les nombreux travaux consacrés à la dégradation oxydante des polluants des eaux par photocatalyse hétérogène, montrent que, pour la plupart des composés [7,8], la miné-ralisation peur être atteinte, sauf pour les herbicides de type atrazine, simazine et triétazine [9], ainsi que pour certains composés chlorofluorocarbonés [10] incomplètement dégra-dables.Notre étude a pour objectif de vérifier l'efficacité de la photocatalyse hétérogène sur le dioxyde de titane pour la dégradation et la minéralisation de l'uracile (I) et de ses dérivés halogénés (II-V), en dioxyde de carbone, ions ammonium et nitrate. En considérant l'uracile comme molé-cule de référence des dérivés pyrimidiques, nous avons étu-dié l'influence du pH et l'effet des anions hydrogénocarbo-nate, chlorure, nitrate et sulfate, sur sa vitesse initiale de disparition.Les bases pyrimidiques, provenant de la décomposition des acides nucléiques, sont présentes dans les eaux naturelles et les sédiments. L'uracile (I) et la thymine (VI) ont été mises en évidence dans les eaux de rivières [11]. Le 5-bromo-uracile (IV) et le 5-iodo-uracile (V) sont produits par une algue marine, Corallina pilulifera, par halogénation enzymatique [12] de l'uracile (I). De même, tous les 5-halogéno-uraciles sont produits par halogénation chimique dans des milieux riches en ions halogénures [13,14]. Ces produits de substitution, indésirables, sont connus pour être mutagènes et tératogènes [15,16] lorsqu'ils sont incorporés à l'ADN comme substituants de la thymine (VI).En outre, le cycle pyrimidique sert de base à la production de nombreux herbicides, qui, du fait de leur usage fré-quent, persistent dans l'environnement à des teneurs excé-dant parfois la limite supérieure autorisée.
