Increasing age induces fusion in the hyoid bone. The present study was conducted to assess the usefulness of fusion in the hyoid bone in age estimation. A total of 130 excised hyoid bones from dead bodies belonging to the age group of 4-70 years were studied. The mean age of unilateral and bilateral fusion in males was 39.39 and 41.77 years, respectively. The mean age of unilateral and bilateral fusion in females was 37.5 and 45 years, respectively. Fusion was not seen in ages below 20 years. Non-fusion has been found even after the age of 60 years. Although there was significant association between fusion in the hyoid bone and advancing age, it cannot be considered a good indicator for estimating age. With a high degree of variation in the age of fusion, the hyoid bone needs to be studied along with other determinants for estimating age. Fusion in the hyoid bone is not related to the sex of the victim and there is no tendency towards early fusion on the left side compared with the right side. If the victim of pressure on the neck is aged over 38 years, the clinicians and forensic experts should expect fractured hyoids. If a fractured hyoid bone is not found even in the elderly, pressure on the neck cannot be ruled out.
Background:Ischemic heart disease (IHD) following atherosclerosis is a giant killer and the incidence of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries is rapidly increasing among Indians. The study was formulated to assess the histomorphological atherosclerotic changes in aorta and coronary arteries at autopsy by applying the modified American Heart Association classification of atherosclerosis based on morphological descriptions to find out the age and sex related prevalence of atherosclerosis in the semi-urban population of Kolar, a district in Southern India.Materials and Methods:Autopsy was conducted on 113 cases whose age ranged from 8-85 years. Autopsy was conducted by the conventional technique; heart and the aorta were removed and fixed in 10% formalin. The heart was dissected along the direction of flow of blood and aorta along the posterior surface. Microscopic assessment of the three main coronary arteries and aorta was done using the modified American Heart Association classification of atherosclerosis. Proportions were analyzed using Chi-square test. Results:The number of males was 78 (69%) and number of females was 35 (31%). Mean age was 37.11 ± 15.69 years. Increased incidence of intermediate lesions was noted in young individuals (15-34 yrs). Atherosclerotic lesions were more in left anterior descending artery compared to other coronary arteries and in abdominal aorta compared to thoracic and ascending aorta. Vulnerable plaques were more in right coronary artery. Conclusion:With cardiovascular disease attaining pandemic proportions, the study of subclinical atherosclerosis is the need of the hour to estimate the disease burden in the asymptomatic population. The increased amount of atherosclerosis (advanced and intermediate lesions) found in the young population in this study gives an indication that anti-atherogenic preventive measures need to be implemented in young individuals, so as to prevent coronary artery disease from causing premature death.
Background:The morphometry of tricuspid valve complex is of clinical importance for cardiovascular surgeons and there is scarcity of such data in Indian literature. The study was conducted to record normal tricuspid valve measurements which would serve as baseline data for the Indian population.Material and Methods:The study was carried out on 100 formalin fixed hearts without any pathology from patients who had died of non-vascular causes and whose age ranged from 8 to 85 yrs. The hearts were grouped into three cohorts corresponding to age, 54 hearts aged between 8 to 40 yrs, 42 hearts aged between 41 to 64 yrs and 4 hearts aged 65 yrs and above. Dissection was performed according to standard autopsy techniques. The measurements were recorded using a flexible millimeter ruler and surgical suture material. The dimensions measured were the attachment lengths of anterior, posterior and septal leaflets. The circumference of the valve along with the frontal and sagittal dimensions was measured. Area of the valve expressed as a triangle and as an ellipse was calculated. Results:The measurements obtained were assessed using SPSS software. Statistically significant increase in tricuspid valve measurements were observed with advancing age both in men and women. In younger hearts the tricuspid valve resembled a triangle and with advancing age the tricuspid valve became more elliptical in shape. Conclusion:We hope this study will serve as baseline data for the tricuspid valve measurements in the Indian population and it will be of clinical use for patients with various tricuspid valve abnormalities.
We report a case in which the dead body was found with rigor mortis in an unusual position. The dead body was lying on its back with limbs raised, defying gravity. Direction of the salivary stains on the face was also defying the gravity. We opined that the scene of occurrence of crime is unlikely to be the final place where the dead body was found. The clues were revealing a homicidal offence and an attempt to destroy the evidence. The forensic use of ‘rigor mortis in an unusual position’ is in furthering the investigations, and the scientific confirmation of two facts - the scene of death (occurrence) is different from the scene of disposal of dead body, and time gap between the two places.
