This is p e rc e iv e d as being due to a variety o f fa c to rs w hich p reven t w o m en fr o m realising their f u l l p o te n tia l as m anagers. In o th er p a rts o f the world, as w ell as in S o u th Africa, m id d le class w hite m ales have d o m in a te d h ealth services, since m edicine becam e a fo r m a l science, usurping th e tra d ition a l role o f w om en healers. S o m e research indicates that w o m en are in clin ed to practice " fe m in in e " m a n a g em en t styles. It is suggested th a t th e fe m in in e I m asculine d ic h o to m y is artificial a n d th at qualities w hich ensure effective m a n a g em ent sh o u ld n o t be regarded as genderlinked. Leaders in the h ealth services sh o u ld strive f o r interdisciplinary, m ixed -g en d er educa tio n a n d training at all levels. Id en tifica tio n a n d d ev elo p m en t o f m a n a g em en t p o te n tia l in w o m en health-care professionals, role-m odelling a n d sp o n so r-m en to r relationships sh o u ld be encou raged to allow w o m en to acquire the f u l l range o f m a n a g em en t skills a n d to achieve p o sitio n s o f p o w e r a n d a u th o rity in the health services.Women predominate numerically in the health care occupations, excepting medicine, but have not achieved proportional dominance in positions of power and authority in the health services. This is anomalous in view of the many highly qualified and capable women who have been and are currently active in the teaching and practice of medicine, nursing
